The Thompson Family

March 8, 2019 by Bryelle Dafeldecker

About the Thompson Family
Alejandra Ochoa de Thompson, founder and creative director of Thompson Traders, grew up in Pátzcuaro, Michoacán, located in the bucolic countryside of west-central Mexico. During those formative years, the seed that would grow into Thompson Traders took root – the desire to bring authentic beauty and craftsmanship from Mexico to American homes. Just 10 miles south of Pátzcuaro lies the town of Santa Clara del Cobre, where the native Purépecha were considered the world’s most advanced metallurgists of pre-Columbian times. With 500 years of history and honing, today there are masters at work in Santa Clara del Cobre. Masters in metals, in technique and in making one-of-a-kind, hand-hammered pieces of art. Every piece preserves the legacy of Santa Clara del Cobre and supports the region – a vital mission to Thompson Traders today. Alejandra’s dream became reality when she and her family took the bold step of launching Thompson Traders in 2003. Joining her in the family business the Thompson Traders executive team is made up of Clifford E Thompson, CEO. Clifford R Thompson President. Jonathan Thompson VP Operations, Chris DeVillers VP Sales, Samantha Thompson VP Marketing, and Fred Starr Chairman.

About Thompson Traders

Headquartered in Greensboro, North Carolina, the company owns its factory in Santa Clara del Cobre where designs for sinks, bathtubs, and accessories for the kitchen and bath come to life. Today, stainless steel, brass, and nickel join copper as part of Thompson Traders’ portfolio, along with special finishes and textures, as well as custom capabilities. No matter material or finish, every design is meticulously hand-hammered by coppersmiths in Santa Clara del Cobre. Each design is rooted in this magical place. Drawn and inspired, from Thompson’s heart. www.thompsontraders.com.

The Thompson Traders team is also very active in the community. They have been involved in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation for over 16 years helping to raise over $13 million in that period of time. Fred Starr as President of the board for Eastern Music Festival along with Clifford E Thompson was instrumental in moving the organization forward. Thompson Traders’ is a strong supporter of the arts with Clifford R Thompson serving on the board of the Greensboro Symphony and Co-Chairing the annual fundraiser for 2 years with record-breaking results. Clifford R. Thompson is also active President for Rotary Club of Greensboro and the Crescent Rotary Club Foundation. He is a member of the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce Launch Advisory Board.

The Jerusalem Market Family

March 8, 2019 by Bryelle Dafeldecker

The Hanhan Family
Jerusalem Market

Founded by our father, Saliba Hanhan in 1989, The Original Jerusalem Market in Sedgefield has been offering loyal customers the best Middle Eastern food and market specialties for nearly three decades. My brother Omar and I grew up in the shop and have been working along-side our father for years, with our expertise, knowledge, and passion for the food of our heritage always increasing. When customers started asking for more prepared foods and a place to enjoy them onsite, we decided the time was right for the next generation to grow our family business. So began Jerusalem Market on Elm, a full-service restaurant in the heart of Downtown Greensboro.

Jerusalem Market on Elm was founded in 2016 as an extension of their 27-year-old Sedgefield branch. Their father Saliba Hanhan founded the Original Jerusalem Market in Greensboro in 1989. Quickly he established a reputation for making the best Middle Eastern specialties and making no buts about it. “You Will Be Pleased” was soon cemented into their customer’s minds. Brother’s Easa and Omar grew up working in the store and always had a passion for it. They loved the store but their customers always asked them for more food and more seating, so given the chance they opened Jerusalem Market on Elm.

Alex Amoroso

March 8, 2019 by Bryelle Dafeldecker

Alex Amoroso
Owner | Cheesecakes by Alex

Alex grew up in the restaurant business and it has always been his first love.  In early 2002, his mother-in-law, who lives with them, asked him to make a cheesecake. Well, Alex, being the good son-in-law, made a recipe out of a book. All during the process, he had a taste in mind for the way this cake should turn out – he couldn’t wait to taste it. When he did, however, he was truly disappointed in both the taste and the texture. The challenge had begun.

Over the next few months, all he could think about was the taste he had in mind. He changed this and changed that and baked and baked until he finally got the taste and texture he wanted. When they finally tasted the final recipe, they knew this was it! Good thing; Alex thinks his wife and mother-in-law were ready to run him out if he baked one more cheesecake for them to try! He then began to bake some for friends and family and he always received the same response. Soon, this obsession/hobby grew out of his kitchen and he set up shop.

Cheesecakes by Alex now has twenty-two flavors of cheesecake and many other bakery items. Alex loves to see the reaction of people trying these cakes for the first time; it really brings him a lot of joy.
