One city, one film

A Community Conversation

Watch the movie. Join the conversation.

The 2021 film is “13th,” an Oscar-nominated documentary from director Ava DuVernay that examines the U.S. prison system and looks at how the country’s history of racial inequality drives the high rate of incarceration in America.

In early fall, we plan to host community discussions on the film. Our aim is to foster a truthful, respectful dialogue about our community members’ lived experiences.

13th is available for free on YouTube via Netflix. Netflix subscribers can also watch it on the Netflix app.

History

In summer 2020, as issues surrounding advancing racial equity took center stage in the national conversation, the Chamber and the Greensboro Public Library facilitated a local dialogue about Black experiences. We encouraged our fellow residents to watch the movie “The Hate U Give,” or to read the book it’s based on. This gave us all a common language and starting point for talking about inequality in our community.

Spread the word

We encourage our partner businesses and organizations to spread the word about the One City, One Film effort on their websites and social media. The following is a sample email to send out to employees, volunteers and other stakeholders in your organization.

Hello,

As issues surrounding advancing racial equity take center stage in the national conversation, the Greensboro Chamber and the Greensboro Public Library are working together to facilitate a local dialogue about Black experiences – starting with the One City, One Film initiative. [Business/organization name] supports this effort and encourages each of you to participate as you see fit.

One City, One Film asks citizens to watch the movie “The Hate U Give,” based on the novel of the same name. This will give us all a common language and starting point for talking about inequality in our community.

The following virtual film discussions are planned via Zoom:

July 21, 9-11:30 a.m.

July 22, 1-3:30 p.m.

July 23, 6-8:30 p.m.
