The 2021 film is “13th,” an Oscar-nominated documentary from director Ava DuVernay that examines the U.S. prison system and looks at how the country’s history of racial inequality drives the high rate of incarceration in America.
In early fall, we plan to host community discussions on the film. Our aim is to foster a truthful, respectful dialogue about our community members’ lived experiences.
History
In summer 2020, as issues surrounding advancing racial equity took center stage in the national conversation, the Chamber and the Greensboro Public Library facilitated a local dialogue about Black experiences. We encouraged our fellow residents to watch the movie “The Hate U Give,” or to read the book it’s based on. This gave us all a common language and starting point for talking about inequality in our community.

As issues surrounding advancing racial equity take center stage in the national conversation, the Greensboro Chamber and the Greensboro Public Library are working together to facilitate a local dialogue about Black experiences – starting with the One City, One Film initiative. One City, One Film asks citizens to watch the movie “The Hate U Give,” based on the novel of the same name. This will give us all a common language and starting point for talking about inequality in our community.
